Cultural opportunities
Nelson is a city built on its reputation for being Canada’s number one small arts town. No matter what the season, Nelson offers a wide range of arts and cultural entertainments.
These are just some of the highlights.
Artwalk
During the month of July, August and September the business community teams up with artists to turn every Friday night into an art event. Restaurants and shops become ‘galleries’, opening their doors to the art loving public who can stroll down the street, enjoy good food and lively musicians while they check out the latest art offerings of local artists.
Farmer's Markets
From spring to fall this farmer's market acknowledges the work of Nelson and district's farmers and artisans in a lively, welcoming and bountiful market day: Wednesdays on Josephine Street and on Saturdays down by the Japanese gardens at cootonwood falls.
Kootenay Artisan Christmas Market
A Christmas fair, this market features many of the fine arts this area is known for. Three days long, it showcases an array wonderful Christmas gift ideas and hosts live entertainment daily.
Nelson Summer Songfest
Featuring public performances as well as workshops, classes and coaching, this weeklong feast of classical choral music draws artists from Nelson and beyond.
Festival Nelson
Encourages young musical talent through participation in a non-competitive festival that promotes the values of cooperation and educational interaction.
Theatre
The Capitol Theatre, a beautifully restored building, offers a wonderful variety of cultural events from children's theatre to professional adult productions, live musical performances as well as showcasing filmmakers’ talents. It has become the hub of the performance arts in the
Kootenay region.
Museum
Nelson's newly renovated Touchstones Museum of Art and
History is a cultural anchor for the larger Kootenay area. The museum provides historical
artefacts, archives and art exhibitions geared toward celebrating the vibrant lives and organizations that make up the communities of Nelson and beyond. The museum's mission is to promote knowledge, understanding and appreciation of local history and art.
